Adult Umpires
The RGS Umpire Program also accepts adult umpires ages 18+ that register and attend RGS Umpire training. All adult umpires will need to be registered with USA Softball which includes a background check and SafeSport certification.
Umpire-In-Chief
The Umpire in Chief (UIC) is responsible for the supervision, training, and scheduling of our umpires. The UIC also has the responsibility to rule on all protests.
Umpire Training
Each umpire is required to complete a minimum number of hours of training prior to officiating their first game. Follow-up is done throughout the season to reinforce proper techniques, answer questions, and evaluate performance. Training for umpires begins in January and includes both classroom and field work. Any Manager or Coach interested in learning more about the role and training of the umpires and/or the rules of our league are invited to attend the umpire training.
Role & Responsibilities
Umpires are expected to:
- Arrive at the field 15 minutes before the start of the game.
- Wear league-issued shirts and equipment during all games.
- Inspect the field and player equipment to be used in the game (bats, helmets, etc.).
- Conduct a manager/coach meeting at home plate before game time to review local rules and answer any questions.
- Ensure a smooth flow of the game and make all calls and rule interpretations necessary during game play.
Note: Once the game begins, the umpire is in charge. Only badged female members of the team’s Core 4 are authorized to talk to the umpire during the game.
Spectator Conduct
It is the duty of all individuals associated with RGS to recognize that our umpires are young individuals doing their very best. All participants must keep this in mind during games conduct themselves in a positive manner. RGS members and/or spectators should never approach an umpire after a game to discuss calls. It is the responsibility of the team Managers and Coaches to address any unruly conduct during a game and address any issues that might interfere with the enjoyment of the game for others.
